Thorpe Park
Thorpe Park is one of the most popular theme parks in the UK.
The Tussauds Group added Thorpe Park to their group in 1998, and as such they became of the largest theme park operators in Europe. Thorpe Park joins other theme parks such as Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures, Heide Park, Warwick Castle and Madame Tussauds.
Thorpe Park is seen as one of Europe's most popular leisure attractions which is a strong testament to what started as a small restoration project back in 1970. Back then, the site was a working gravel pit owned by a Concrete company, but once planning permission was granted and the pit refilled, work began with vigour. The theme park concept was quite new at this time and required some imagination on the part of the developers. Given the nature of the landscape and the enormity of the task, a water based theme park was born and the former gravel pits became lakes.
Just a few years later, in 1979, the new Thorpe Park theme park was opened to the public for the first time, and as they say, the rest is history.
